Children are scared of dentists. So when it comes to getting your child to a dentist it can be a struggle, especially if a tooth extraction or filling is in order. How can you make your child go willingly to a dentist?
Prepare the Child
In their busy everyday lives, parents try to fit in caring for their children. Food is on the table, homework must be done before bedtime, baseball games and piano lessons must never be missed ad infinitum but there are no regular visits to the dentist unless there is a problem with a tooth. This is understandable considering that dentists are expensive. But there is a way to prepare the child for the dentist without spending tons of dental money.
Step 1 Complement children about their teeth when your child is around. This sets the child’s mind working on the idea that a dentist does wonders to teeth. If the answer is in the negative, asked to be excused because their teeth is nice it makes you cry, er, you thought they had a dentist taking care of their teeth.
Step 2 Entertain your child’s queries about teeth and dentists and answer truthfully if the matter of tooth extraction is taken up.
Step 3 Bring your child with you if you have a prophylaxis treatment appointment with the dentist and show your child how clean your teeth is after the session.
Step 4 Explain why teeth is important apart from a good smile. You can show pictures of dentures and people with no front teeth. The child will get the message loud and clear.
Step 5 Follow up on the child’s dental hygiene everyday and reward his or her diligence.
Step 6 Ask friends and family about pediatric dentists if you do not have a family dentist. Their recommendation is worthwhile.
Step 7 Look up dentists specializing in pediatric dentistry and ask for an appointment just to acquaint your child with the dentist. Ask the dentist about the age requirement for his practice. Some dentists do not take in very young children while others do.
During the visit, the dentist will probably show your child how to brush teeth properly. Also, check the dentist’s credentials in pediatric dentistry. At this point, the child and dentist should begin to know each other because a dentist who is familiar and great with children will be good for your child.
Clues to a Good Dentist
A good dentist takes the time to make the child comfortable and explains what he is about to do. He must be honest about the procedure – if there will be some pain or none or just a bit of discomfort. This honesty earns the child’s trust, an essential element for a good relationship between child and dentist.
Anytime a dental emergency arises, you know where to bring your child and there will no be no tugs-of-war. The child is ready for the dentist. This saves you the trouble of worrying over your child’s dental health.
